When first analyzing the information provided on Google Analytics regarding the performance of my personalized website, it’s evident that there’s not a very steady flow of visitors and internet traffic.  This is due to the fact that throughout the semester, I would make small changes here and there and this would cause the internet traffic to go up or down.  I optimized my website through Google Adwords, which drove a lot of internet traffic to my site with the paid listings.  I went over my allotted $15.00 budget, but I still drove a lot of new users to my website and had a decent click through rate.  The tools provided on Analytics allows me to view how many new users visited, and how many pages they clicked through, which was about 3.4, and how long they stayed on my page, which was a little under 2 minutes.  This means people found my website interesting enough to click through it a little bit and explore it more in depth.  If I added more pages and posts, I’d image that number to increase because of the fact that it gives users more options. I am very pleased with the internet traffic my website has gotten.  It is brand new, not done by a professional by any means, and the posts are merely homework assignments with a little creativity mixed in for writing purposes.  It’s so strange to think that now this information is online for anyone to read.

I think the main purpose of MKTG 470 , taught by Professor Theresa B. Clarke, has been to give us an overview of all the techniques  and all of the opportunity there is for marketing on the internet.  Along with great conversation topics in my most recent interviews, this class as given me a lot of base knowledge that I will be able to apply in the real world and that will help me along my marketing career.  So much of today’s marketing is done online, not knowing about these tools would put me at a disadvantage against other students looking for entry level employment. Optimizing internet traffic is beneficial for any company, whether they are based online or not.  Internet traffic is important in creating brand awareness and accessibility for your company.

Through using Google Webmaster, it was easy to track a lot of the data that is necessary for optimizing SEO and driving traffic to your site.  Though you can’t change the budget for these, since they are not PPC, it makes it a little more challenging.  This requires a lot more outside work than just working from this one tool.  In order to best optimize your site, it’s important to have the link to your website show up on as many places as you can.  This includes search engines, other websites, or email newsletters.  These get send out to broad range of people, so it’s easy to target.  This is particularly useful after you have gotten the customers information.  Then you can send them personalized emails and link your web page, which ultimately increases traffic.

Webmaster tools is very user friendly.  It has a complete breakdown of your personal website, piece by piece so you can see which things are best for driving traffic.  The best one I have so far is my JMU keywords, which makes sense because that has been the focus point of my optimization.  I will continue on this process through link building and optimizing my keywords.

As we all know, in the dating world,  there is a distinct line between stalking and showing interest in someone.  Now compare this situation to the advertisements you generally see on the side of your Facebook page or your Google search pages.  Are websites crossing the line between showing interest in you as a customer and transitioning more into the “creepy stalker guy”?

An article from the New York Times gives the basic rundown of what exactly remarketing is.  It’s a form of online advertising where it takes cookies from websites a user has recently visited, and starts putting that item or something related…EVERYWHERE.  It’s like running into that same creepy stalker guy at the gym, at lunch, on the street, outside of your class….”coincidentally.”  You start to wonder, does this online company (or guy for metaphoric purposes) know TOO much about me?  Is this becoming an issue for others?  And are there any laws that can protect me?  The article addresses the fact that legislators are talking about possible laws that would prevent these online companies and search engines from tracking so closely the online activity of users, but there is nothing set in place yet.

I think because the Internet itself is so relatively new and there is so much more to be discovered about its capabilities and functions as it relates to marketing and advertising, that it’s hard to compose a formal law about it at this time.  Now for me personally, I don’t mind when a cute dress or pair of shoes pops up on my side bar, because I’m likely to click on this.  When Forever 21 wants to suggest a new item to me, I don’t have a problem with it one bit! And I don’t think it’s too invasive because I enjoy my browser knowing a little about me and what I might like.  It’s almost like my own personal shopping guide.  However, I do see where people might view this to be intrusive and give away too much personal information to the next user.

The article references a woman who is constantly reminded of her searches and purchases regarding weight loss.  Now, as we all know, you do NOT talk to a woman about her weight, under no circumstances.  So the constant reminder of a time that she may have needed it or thought she needed it, would be a serious damper on her self image.  Most women find this to be a private thing, not something they want displayed all over their browser for other friends or family members to see.   Additionally, if someone is purchasing something for a loved one and your sidebar advertisment is always referencing back to that item, it could be a dead giveaway and ruin a potential surprise gift.

Subject of retargeted marketing

So it’s a tough call about whether or not this form of advertising and reaching out to customers is good or bad.  It’s a good way for marketers to extend their customer reach and increase sales by always reminding customers that they NEED to purchase that Coach wristlet as a graduation gift for their daughter (wink, wink)……but it can also go too far.

I predict that there will be tighter regulations on this type of invasive advertising within the next few years, because people will claim it is invading their privacy and their personal rights are being taken away.  So back to my original metaphor regarding how much interest to show.  It’s great to show someone your interested in them, as long as you can maintain self control and keep respect for them and their personal space.  So let this be a life lesson to both marketers and those trying to find a date:  everyone likes an admirer, just as long as it’s not crossing into the “creepy stalker guy” that just so happens to find the parking spot next to yours everyday…

As May 5th approaches faster and faster, I’ve been on a job application frenzy, trying to keep up with school work, and  going to group meetings, all while trying to enjoy the last 6 weeks of college, EVER.  It’s actually a pretty sad thought, but what’s even more sad is unfortunate realization that as college seniors, we will never have another summer vacation again! At least Education majors get their summers off, but not Marketing.  The world doesn’t stop  doing business in those perfect beach months of June-August, unfortunately.  So on top of scheduling these never ending group meetings, studying for what seems to be the hardest tests in the world, and applying for my dream job of the day, I have been doing some thinking about how I can optimize that one lonely month of May that I will call my “summer vacation” until I have to commit myself to working 9-5 (job offer permitting) for probably the next 35-40 years.  Saying it out loud makes it seem worse than it is, but in actuality it is going to be a really awesome experience and I can’t wait to start working.  But back to my one single month of summer.

I’ve been thinking of things I can do, mainly near the beach, to soak up all the sun I can possibly get in that short amount of time when you never know what the weather will do.  At this rate, it will probably reach 90 degrees by then, but I’ll save the Global Warming spiel for another time.  Every summer after we get out of school, all my friends from high school get a house down in Outer Banks, North Carolina. It’s a great way for us all to reconnect after not seeing each other for a while and we get to catch up on what were going to be doing that summer, etc.  Those plans are certainly still in the works, and I would be very disappointed if it didn’t happen on my last summer ever!

I also can’t help but think about the many things that I will be missing due to my 1 month of summer coming so early in the season.  I’m going to miss one of the best parts about summer, in my opinion, which are the country concerts held throughout the summer at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Virginia Beach.

Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Virginia Beach

Some of my best memories have been singing along to “Ticks” by Brad Paisley or “Keg in the Closet” by Kenny Chesney under the hot summer sun with all of my close friends.  I’m getting nostalgic just thinking about it.  These concerts really brought out a big crowd that was fun and loud and just looking for a good time.  We would set up corn hole boards, grills, food, and loud country music a few hours before the concert started to get ourselves ready for the night’s event.  My friends and I have been going to these concerts for years and most of us have purchased the Country Megaticket way in advance to get the best deals on the concerts and insure attendance at all of the shows.  It seems expensive, but when you break it down by concert, it comes out to be a really good thing.

So I haven’t yet looked at this summer’s schedule, but when I do there will definitely be a weekend trip planned for at least one of the shows.  It will never be the same as it was years ago when all we had to do was drive 30 minutes. Now there will be friends coming from all over the state, and some that still take that 30 minute ride.  I guess it’s just a part of growing up and growing apart.  The key is to stick together with the people that are close to you and find a way to make things like these concerts work.  So in the long run (assuming I will be living in the DC area), a 4 hour drive home to do what I love with the people I love is nothing.

When I declared my major as Marketing sophomore year of college, I had this idea in my head that I was going to get a job doing what they do on the AMC’s Mad Men (minus the drinking, smoking and womanizing they do on the job, of course).  Lately, I have discovered that this really isn’t what most marketing is at all.  On the contrary, that dream job that I’ve had in my head this whole time, turns out to be more of a career for Graphic Design or Media Arts majors. At first I thought to myself that I had wasted my whole career at JMU in the wrong major, doing the wrong thing, not realizing that there are so many other jobs out there that would be just as rewarding.

As my job hunt continues, I have come across so many things that I probably wouldn’t have even considered had my dreams of becoming the female Don Draper come true.  Don’t get me wrong, sales positions are plentiful and can be very rewarding for the right personality type, but I don’t see that in me at this point in my life.  I’ve always wanted to do some more creative, something that would be seen to the public eye, which I had always assumed was creating advertisements and catchy slogans.  But it’s not limited to those few options.

This day and age, with the rise of Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Blogs, Forums, ect., it is possible to be on the forefront of the company, interacting and communicating with customers and potential customers directly.  Internet Marketing jobs are the next big things in today’s world and it’s impossible to ignore those opportunities.  They allow for creativity, expression, influence on customers, expanding company reach, and many many other roles in the company.  This can be the biggest thing a company does or the smallest, it all depends on the company at hand.

Another thing that I had never thought of before looking for jobs, and talking to people personally about their job hunt experiences, was company branding and imaging.  This is a more indirect way to interact with customers, but it’s on a much bigger scale.  How does the company want to be seen in the eyes of consumers?  What kinds of marketing does the company want to employ, or events do they want to attend?  It’s about giving the company reputation and something to be known for in the community.  This is on a larger scale, but it can have a longer lasting effect on the company even after your gone.

So don’t get me wrong, I still strive to be a big time advertising executive officer at Sterling-Cooper (or something like it) but while I’m still getting my experience in the industry and learning more, and making network connections, I’ve realized there are so many other things I can do with the skills I already have.  I have become more open minded and even more, I have become more aware of all the things “Marketing” entails.

I have been using Twitter on and off, mostly on, since I was first assigned to get in Carey Cole’s COB 204 class about Computer Information Systems when I was just a little sophomore.  At the time, I was like…”What is this website?  Do people actually care what other people are “tweeting”?  Isn’t this just an overload of Facebook statuses?”  I didn’t really use it at all, unless it was to tweet in order to get the extra credit, of course.  Even when some of my friends started using it around junior year, I was still unsure about how this could possibly be an effective way of communicating.  It wasn’t until I really started becoming active on the website that I realized its full potential.

Twitter is easily one of the fastest way to make news and other information viral on the internet.  For example, last night I was browsing through my timeline, when the latest tweet was about the death of Whitney Houston (R.I.P). I was shocked to hear the news, but even more shocked about how I found out so quickly.  Articles hadn’t even been written yet, and I knew!

This was just a very recent example of something I’ve known for a few months now.  This summer I had an internship in Arlington, VA and I had the chance to see how Twitter works from a business perspective.  There’s a function called a “tweet deck” which notifies you every time someone tweets about something you’ve specified on your deck.

What does a Tweet Deck look like?

This gives companies the power to know when they are being talked about, what they are saying, and who is saying it.  That gives them so much power over consumers, because they can see what is being said, and that gives them the ability to reach out to consumers and make connections with other companies.  It’s all very interesting, and it literally happens in no time at all.

This site allows data to go viral in no time, and it is quickly being mastered by Internet Marketing geniuses in order to change the way firms interact with their customers in order to gather more information.

I chose to have the new theme to my personalized website be  Spectrum 1.0.2 by Ignacio Ricci.  As I was browsing through the themes, a lot of them seemed really formal and strict, with straight lines and bold colors, and what seemed to be a distinct layout to the theme, and not much creativity.  As if the creators (no offense!) had just drawn squares, colored them deep blue or red, and called it “Business Theme 2.”  They all seemed generic, and honestly, pretty boring.

At first I wasn’t sure what kind of themes were out there, but I knew I didn’t want one like the ones I described above, because I don’t think that would be a very good representation of who I am as a person, and what my website is going to reflect.  Yes, I can be serious and get things together when I need to, but isn’t blogging supposed to be about expressing yourself? To the world?  Do I really want to be known as the girl with the generic business theme? No!

So I chose Spectrum, because it has bright colors and wavy lines without being too obnoxious.   It’s simple enough that your eyes aren’t being overwhelmed with patterns and colors and unsure of where to go next, but its fun, and exciting, and I think that most reflects who I am as a person.  The colors are interesting, and I think it gives my site a personal touch.

Additionally, the word Spectrum means “a broad range of varied yet related ideas or objects” and I think that’s exactly what this blog and website is going to do for me.  This isn’t going to be a blog about cooking, or fashion, or movies, or anything specific, its going to be about me, and my life.  Which I would say encompasses a very broad range of varied yet related things!

So I hope you enjoy all the beautiful, bright, energetic colors and posts to come!

Welcome to my blog.

I am currently enrolled in Strategic Internet Marketing (MKTG 470) taught by Dr. Theresa B. Clarke at James Madison University.  As one of the course requirements, all students will be completing some of the assignments as blog posts.  This is my first official blog post for Dr. Clarke’s course in the JMU Department of Marketing.
